Host spotlight – Wild Folk, Bristol

Hannah Morris created Wild Folk from a passion for nature, hosting everything from foraging walks to fire cooking and wild cocktails. Ahead of her first sold out experience with Yuup, she tells us the story of Wild Folk and why becoming a Yuup host has left her with more time to make her experiences special...

It all started when I joined a couple of local foraging walks. Soon I was taking what I’d discovered and really exploring local wild spaces for the first time. I wanted to go on more group foraging walks, but many of them were often expensive or sold out and as my own foraging knowledge grew, I soon wondered whether I could host my own.

It was really important for me to create an experience that was friendly and inclusive, where anyone could come alone if they wanted to and meet new people. The idea was to allow people to experience nature and grow their confidence in discovering wild ingredients - and I set about creating a couple of small foraging walks to start. That was back at the end of 2018, and I've been running Wild Folk ever since.

When guests come to one of my experiences, from foraging to wild cooking, my hope is that they have a really nourishing day surrounded by nature. Each experience is an excuse to get outside and a chance to explore some of the many green spaces we have in Bristol. So far I have worked with Totally Wild UK to run the foraging walks, who do a lots of cooking with the wild ingredients they find. For me, this is an important side of getting into foraging - cooking is a great way to integrate nature and the seasons into our daily life. It’s not always obvious where you can forage and what wild ingredients you should look out for, but hopefully we can take away those worries. People can just come along and enjoy a day immersing themselves in a beautiful wild space, whilst discovering something new.

If you’re inspired to explore a green space yourself I’d recommend Snuff Mills, which has a lovely fishing pond or Stoke Park, which has a stream running through it - anywhere green with water is always a winner for me. Another good Bristol day out is going to Chew Valley Lake and exploring with a wander around the waterline, before heading to Salt & Malt for some of the best fish and chips in town.

"Yuup has sold all the spaces I shared on the platform for my first experience with very little effort on my part. It feels like that’s how it should be - freeing up my time to focus on making the experience itself really special for the guests."

A big part of the work of putting on an event is the marketing - both in the cost for ads and the time it takes to create listings across multiple sites, posts on social media and more. I have a full time job so this can be not only time consuming, but it also doesn't guarentee that every space will sell. This time round, Yuup has sold all the spaces I shared on the platform for my first experience with very little effort on my part. It feels like that’s how it should be - freeing up my time to focus on making the experience itself really special for the guests.

Knowing that my experience will be seen by the right people in Bristol and that it will sell out has always been the dream. My advice for anyone thinking of hosting their own experience through Yuup is... Go for it!
