Here’s a chance to learn the basics of machine knitting with Bristol textile designer, Ria Burns. With a maximum of only three people on this experience, you’ll work at your own individual knitting machine for the day. Using her many skills in textile design and sustainable fashion, Ria will teach you the art of machine knitting techniques from scratch, and no previous machine experience is necessary. Complete beginners are very much welcome here.
You’ll learn the basic functions of your knitting machine, including punch cards for patterns. Once you’ve got to grips with your machine you’ll make your own Shetland wool scarf made using the techniques you've learnt throughout the day. This experience would make an ideal gift for enthusiastic crafters or anyone wanting to try their hand at learning a new craft. On the day you’ll be using a Brother knitting machine and all equipment and yarns will be provided. Groups for this experience are kept small to make sure Ria has lots of one on one with everyone, and that at the end of the day you go home with the skills needed to machine knit.
Workspaces will be at a social distance for this experience and groups will be limited to only three people. Throughout the day you'll be working at your own knitting machine.
For Ria, it all started with a love of yarn and an interest in sustainable fashion. She specialised in fashion knitwear for her BA in Fashion Design, but it was at Bath Spa where her eponymous brand of botanically dyed, British wool knitwear was researched and developed. Her knitwear is made with an exclusive lambswool yarn spun from fleece from Fernhill Farm, just 15 miles away from her house in Bristol. She uses homegrown plant dyes to add pops of colour to her work and loves sharing textile printmaking methods with anyone wanting to learn more about natural dyes. All Ria’s knitwear is designed, dyed and made in Bristol, using hand powered knitting machines and utilising energy and water efficient dyeing methods.View more experiences by Ria Burns Knitwear
