A one day introduction to natural dyeing using British wool yarns., where you’ll will learn how to naturally dye a range of colours using homegrown and foraged plants, and food waste. Hosted at Ria’s home studio and dye garden in North Somerset, the course will be a holistic approach to creating colour from plants, from petal to pigment!
Aimed at yarn crafters of all skill levels, this workshop will use a variety of British wool yarns ranging from super fine Shetland to chunky Herdwick, designed to showcase the diversity of our native breeds. Several dyeing methods will be explored in order to create a variety of striking effects.
You will leave with lots of samples, notes and the knowledge to continue your natural dyeing journey at home. This workshop is hands on, communal and collaborative. With an intentionally small class size (maximum 6 students), there will be plenty of opportunities to learn from Ria’s vast experience and knowledge of working with natural dyes.

This workshop will take place at Ria's home studio in Congresbury, North Somerset.
Parking is available, and it is accessible by bus from Bristol or a 25 minute walk from Yatton train station. Full address and directions will be sent after booking.
Tea, coffee and some snacks will be provided but please bring a packed lunch.
Please wear comfortable clothing that you do no mind getting splashes of dye on, or bring an apron. If the weather is good we will be mostly working outside; please dress appropriately! In the event of poor weather we will work indoors.
This workshop will be held at Ria’s home studio and dye garden in Congresbury, Bristol, BS49 5AA. It’s accessible by public transport and there is parking available nearby.
Your host will be Ria, textile designer and the founder of Ria Burns Knitwear. They’ll take you through their processes of creating uniquely different yarn and knitwear. Ria always aims to champion the natural hues and qualities of British wool. They create one-off designs adding vibrant flashes of colour through natural hand dyeing, and is the perfect person to learn more about sustainable crafting from.
