What you'll do

Discover traditional soap making with Margaret May Soaps, hosted by local maker Karen, in her home workshop. Watch and see how traditional handmade soaps are created, then make your own.

Karen will show you how to make soap first hand, using high quality ingredients and traditional processes. Then you’ll roll your sleeves up and create your own soaps using a recipe rich in coconut oil and vitamin e. You’ll finish up with your own honey and oatmeal soap ‘loaf’ to take home - which you can slice into 5-6 soaps to enjoy afterwards.

As an extra bonus, Karen will also show you how to make lip balms by creating a batch on the day and then giving everyone a pot of this freshly made balm to take home.

About Margaret May Soaps

Margaret May Soaps was created by Karen, an independent Bristol creator and passionate crafter. The company is proudly named after Karen’s grandmother, a strong, feisty and independent Somerset farmer’s wife. Margaret May Soaps are all made in a home workshop. They use traditional methods and natural ingredients and their products are sold at several independent Bristol shops and local craft markets. Karen loves sharing her craft and introducing people to the world of homemade, natural products. Come along to her experiences with any questions on using natural ingredients, and you’ll discover everything you’d like to know about creating your own soaps, whilst enjoying a good cup of tea.

Your host

Karen Evans

Karen will be your host, and has been making traditional artisan soap for the last five years. After many years of teaching art, she decided to try making her own natural products and after refining her recipes she started running her own small local business. She loves traditional methods, natural, simple ingredients, and sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm for all things soap, oils, and wellbeing.

How to get there

What people are saying

Karin is an excellent host. Her session was very well prepared and presented and I came away with lots of information. She firstly demonstrated the soap making process and then gave us the practical activity of making our own which was very rewarding. The pace of the afternoon was very relaxed and friendly and I would happily recommend Karin's workshop as excellent value for money.
