Pottery for beginners: learn to throw on the wheel

EmailEver wanted to try your hand at pottery? Do you love the idea of creating something unique and beautiful out of clay? Then join Terra Studio for a fun and relaxing wheel throwing taster session.
This experience is ideal for anyone who is curious about pottery and wants to learn the basics of throwing on the wheel. You'll be guided by a friendly and experienced instructor, who will show you how to centre, shape, and form cylinders and bowls. You'll be amazed by what you can make in just two hours.
You'll also have the option to choose how you want your pots to be glazed. You can either let the experts do it for you, using a food-safe transparent glaze that gives a lovely cream colour, or you can come back and glaze them yourself, using their range of colourful and stunning glazes.
If you choose the latter, you'll need to book a self-directed glaze session on the website, at least four weeks after your initial course date. This will give your pots enough time to dry and be bisque fired before you glaze them. A team member will be there to help you with the glazing process and make sure you're happy with the results.
The taster session is suitable for anyone over the age of 18, regardless of your skill level or experience. All you need to bring is your enthusiasm and creativity. They'll provide everything else, including the clay, tools, aprons, and refreshments. Just make sure you wear warm and comfortable clothes that you don't mind getting a bit messy, and keep your nails short and tidy.
You can collect your pots after six weeks, when they're fully fired and glazed. You can pick them up every Wednesday from 4 to 8 pm. If you can't make it during that time, just drop them an email and they'll arrange another time for you.
They'll keep your pots for three months maximum, so don't forget to claim them. Alternatively, they can post them to you for a small fee, starting from £6.50. Just email terrastudiobristol@gmail.com with your address, a photo of your pot, and the date and name of the course you attended.
We have a 14-day cancellation policy, which means you can cancel or reschedule your booking up to 14 days before your course date. After that, we won't be able to offer any refunds or changes.

On the day
Please bring old clothes, you don’t mind getting dirty and trimmed nails - Your host can be tricky finding as they are tucked away, Terra Studio is on the left-hand side of the driveway next to My Awareness Yoga Studio. The easiest way to find them is using Google Maps (the building with red graffiti mural means you've found them). Allow extra time before the class to find off street parking.

Gabrielle Connell is the maker behind Goob Design. After first finding her love of clay working at North Street Potters in London, Gabrielle went on to graduate from the University of Falmouth where she studied Contemporary Crafts. Gaby works predominately with stoneware creating functional tableware. As well as making her own creations and teaching at Terra Studio and is passionate about creating sustainable pottery.
