Step back in time and explore Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter through the eyes of local author Kathleen Dayus.
This experience is part of City Uncovered: Birmingham, taking place from 18th-31st May 2026 – a limited-time series of unique, under-the-radar experiences designed to help you see the city differently.
What to expect:
You’ll join your guide for a walking tour through the historic Jewellery Quarter, beginning with an introduction to the life and writing of Kathleen Dayus—whose memoirs vividly capture growing up in the area in the early 1900s.
As you explore the streets around Camden Street, you’ll discover how the neighbourhood once looked and felt, brought to life through a blend of storytelling, archive photographs, and readings from Dayus’ work. You’ll hear about daily life, local characters, and the changing identity of the area—standing in the very places she once wrote about.
Along the way, you’ll visit locations including the site of the George and Dragon (now Temper and Brown), uncovering how familiar places have evolved over time. The experience offers a rich, layered view of the Quarter—combining history, literature, and lived experience.
Expect a thoughtful and immersive atmosphere, with plenty of moments to pause, reflect, and see the city from a new perspective.
