Summer Choral Concert: Throughout All Generations

This Summer Choral spectacular promises an unforgettable journey through 100 years of choral music stemming from Charles Villiers Stanford. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or curious about the world of choral music, this event offers something truly special for everyone to enjoy.

Charles Villiers Stanford – who died 100 years ago this year – was one of the most important figures in sacred choral music. Born in Dublin in 1852, Stanford was a prolific composer: a significant number of his compositions are still regularly sung across the country today. He was also a significant teacher of many who would in turn become notable composers. These include Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst, Herbert Howells, Henry Walford Davies (who is buried in the garden at Bristol Cathedral), and many more besides. His pupils in turn went on to teach others, and that lineage continues down through the generations to today, with living composers like Jonathan Dove being able to trace their teaching heritage back to Stanford.

This concert of choral music celebrates Stanford’s life and legacy, with the Cathedral Choir performing not only his music, but that of his pupils, and beyond.

Enjoy a summer’s evening with this celebration of choral excellence at Bristol Cathedral.
