Enjoy an introduction to stained glass painting and discover the art of sgraffito on glass in this workshop, expertly guided by glass artist and teacher Dawn Beedle.
In this creative activity, you will learn how to use the sgraffito technique, which means 'scratched away' in Italian. It is the 'subtractive' art of engraving a design into a thin top layer of black paint to reveal the underlying base colour of the glass. This process creates a stunning pattern in silhouette that looks beautiful when hung in a window.
Using your own individual lightbox and special tools, you will transfer your design onto your chosen glass, bringing your piece to life by gently engraving your pattern or image into the paint.
At the end of the workshop, Dawn will take all the work back to her studio in Bristol to fire the glass, making the paint permanent. If you choose the optional extra (£10 cost) for a leaded surround, Dawn will prepare and add it at this stage. All finished pieces will then be carefully posted back to you.
You will finish the day having learned a fascinating historical craft, and soon you'll receive your own unique, fired-glass creation in the post, ready to be admired for years to come.
