What you'll do

Want to enjoy a one-of-a-kind life drawing experience in the heart of Bristol? Join tutor and multi-disciplinary artist Sarah-Jane Mccarthy, shibari performer Burgundy Rose and rope partner Spring Tide, for an intimate life drawing class.

This will take place at Every Body’s Story ‘MY BODY, MY HOME’ exhibition space at Centrespace Gallery. You'll be surrounded by 100 golden body casts and Divina Botanica floral installations. Arrive early, purchase separate exhibition tickets and take your time wandering around the exhibition before. This class is suitable for all, including total beginners.

The experience:

Sarah’s workshop will allow you to explore your creative side through expression and movement. Sarah will begin by leading a series of fast-paced drawings, gradually getting slower as the workshop progresses. She will guide you, offering support and helping you build your confidence.

Of course, this is life drawing with a difference! Shibari is the Japanese art of intricate rope bondage. Experienced performer and model Burgundy Rose will demonstrate this beautiful practice to music, along with rope partner Spring Tide. Poses will be held for between five to twenty minutes so you can draw from them. It's going to be pretty mesmerising stuff.

About Burgundy Rose:

Burgundy Rose is an LGBTQ+ interdisciplinary performer and rope artist, currently based just outside Bristol. Influenced by Shibari, the Japanese art of rope bondage, they perform and deliver workshops aiming to empower others to explore intimacy and self-expression. Using rope as the tool, the body as the canvas.

About Sarah-Jane Mccarthy:

Sarah-Jane is a South African born, British multidisciplinary artist. This Bristol UWE alumni's work delves into a variety of mediums, mainly in animation, illustration, and design. Sarah's work focuses on feminism, identity, and coming of age stories - communicating these experiences with confidence. Sarah runs regular life drawing classes at Arnolfini through UWE.

The exhibition:

This event will be held in the ‘MY BODY, MY HOME’ exhibition space and Centrespace Gallery. The exhibit is in response to the fact that 97% of women in the UK have been sexually harassed.

100 women and non-binary people have had their bust cast and painted gold. Their golden body casts will be exhibited as armour alongside their stories of sexual harassment and assault. This is an LGBTQIA+ event and a welcoming space for all that attend.

What people are saying

Amazing! Please do more!

Marisa Dee, Jul 2022

I booked this for a friend and kept it a secret until the moment she arrived at the venue. She had THE BEST time and is still buzzing from the whole experience the day after. She said the artist was incredible and now I’m super jealous that I didn’t get to go!
Thank you so much for giving my friend the most amazing and memorable experience.
