In this private, one on one experience you'll learn to machine knit with textile designer, Ria Burns. It's the opportunity to have a completely personalised experience with Ria, and whether you're a beginner or someone with machine experience looking to learn more, anyone is welcome.
Using a Brother knitting machine, Ria will take you through the techniques and textures that you can create. Once you've got to grips with the machine you will create a library of swatches to take home with you, along with lots of ideas and inspiration to continue your machine knitting journey!
Ria will provide all the yarn you need and a knitting machine too, but they're also happy to help you get to grips with your own machine if you'd like to bring it.

Wonderful course with Ria and I learnt so many new techniques to have a go with at home. The one to one session allowed us to go at my speed. Iβm definitely going to come back once Iβve mastered these techniques!
Ria was an excellent teacher, patient, knowledgeable and could articulate the steps so that it was an enjoyable process. Would highly recommend.

For Ria, it all started with a love of yarn and an interest in sustainable fashion. They specialised in fashion knitwear for their BA in Fashion Design, but it was at Bath Spa where their eponymous brand of botanically dyed, British wool knitwear was researched and developed. Their knitwear is made with an exclusive lambswool yarn spun from fleece from Fernhill Farm, just 10 miles away from their house in North Somerset. They uses homegrown plant dyes to add pops of colour to their work and loves sharing textile dyeing methods with anyone wanting to learn more about natural dyes. All Riaβs knitwear is designed, dyed and made in Bristol, using hand powered knitting machines and utilising energy and water efficient dyeing methods.
In 2023 Ria's debut book 'Dyeing Yarn Naturally' was published by the Crowood Press.
Your host will be Ria, textile designer and the founder of Ria Burns Knitwear. Sheβll take you through her processes of creating uniquely different yarn and knitwear. Ria always aims to champion the natural hues and qualities of British wool. She creates one-off designs adding vibrant flashes of colour through natural hand dyeing, and is the perfect person to learn more about sustainable crafting from.
