What you'll do

It's time to delve into the ancient Japanese art of painting and printing on natural fabrics. In this experience, you'll only be using natural pigments, fabrics and soy milk.

Soy milk has been used in printing for centuries, it contains proteins that act as a binder between pigments and cloth. Get your hands on some and learn how to create unique wall hangings and stunning scarves.

Your host Jonti, a print and colour nerd, will give you a brief introduction to soy milk painting's history. Looking at ancient and contemporary examples which will inspire your designs.

Get the opportunity to blend soy milk paints and inks. Make printing blocks using the shapes provided or anything you might have brought from home. Experiment on old pieces of fabric to perfect your technique, before you get busy printing your scarf or wall hanging.

This style of painting and printing encourages spontaneity. Use printing blocks to balance playful elements out with more distinguished notes.

You will leave with a finished handmade product, in addition to materials and instructions that will help you carry on your craft at home.

This experience will cover loads of ground and is suitable for anyone. There's no such thing as mistakes here.

COVID-19 guidelines

The experience will run according to any governmental guidelines that may be in place at the time. If you have any requests regarding social distancing, please don't hesitate to get in contact with your host, who will be happy to accommodate.

On the day

  • Arrive at 10:00 am wearing clothes you don't mind getting messy.
  • Bring a packed lunch and a mug for hot drinks throughout the day.
  • The day will be roughly 7 hours long but can be tailored to your needs.
  • There is parking in the workshop or street parking nearby.
  • Bring any material you think you could experiment with - cookie cutters, shells, stones, bottle tops, candles - the options are endless!
  • A range of blocks and materials will also be supplied for you to experiment with.

About Dead Nettle Craft

Dead Nettle Craft creates bespoke garments using organic, natural and hand-spun fibres. In their opinion fashion shouldn't be fast. Their clothes are naturally dyed and printed using traditional mordant printing techniques. Learn all the basic skills you need to know in their fun workshops. Get lost experimenting with natural dyes and getting beautiful results.

Jonti Allinson-Epps

Jonti (aka the print and colour nerd) hand dyes and naturally prints all of Dead Nettle's clothing. Jonti looks forward to welcoming guests to Dead Nettle's Bedminster studio and sharing his enthusiasm for textile printmaking. He's a big fan of drawing, dogs and exploring our beautiful woodlands.
