Paradise Bottom & Leigh Woods Walk

Bright bluebells, wild garlic and soothing streams are just some of the delights this magical walk includes. This six-mile stroll through Paradise Bottom is every bit as enchanting as it sounds. Pass a beautiful valley with flowing streams off the River Avon's bank and relax as you wander through Leigh Woods' ancient woodland.

Discover this special part of Bristol with Bristol Steppin Sistas, a walking community that celebrates diverse walking groups, sisterhood, and the healing power of nature. Connecting with the outdoors and exploring rural parts of Bristol in a supportive environment was never easier.

This walk is up to a sturdy six miles. If you want to duck out a little earlier, that's no problem, just let your host know when you want to leave. Otherwise, if you're in for the full experience, get ready to step into a fairytale full of grottos, trickling streams and every shade of emerald under the sun.

Paradise Bottom is the remnant of a Leigh Court garden designed by famous landscape gardener Humphry Repton in the 1810s. This picturesque pleasure garden was made to impress and lead to a vista of the River Avon - it's still a beauty to behold today. As you stroll along the scent of wild garlic and lime leaves will fill the air.

As for Leigh Woods, today it's owned and overseen by two organisations – Forestry England to the north and the National Trust to the south. Leigh Woods boasts wonderful walking trails, dense woodlands, rare species, exciting wildlife and spectacular views over the Avon gorge. Book in for a visionary feast and fantastic excuse to get outdoors with a warm, welcoming group of women.

Bristol Steppin Sistas

Bristol Steppin Sistas is a community that empowers women, creating safe places for them to walk while grounding their mental and physical wellbeing. The outdoors is great for clearing the mind and enjoying good times - this is what this community is all about.

This walking group welcomes everyone regardless of their culture or race. Bristol Steppin Sistas acknowledge there's been a reluctance for women of colour to venture into unfamiliar spaces where they might feel exposed, judged or vulnerable. This walking group aims to motivate women of colour to visit rural areas around Bristol they haven't seen before and step across these boundaries in the safety and company of others who share similar experiences. Join this inclusive community celebrating Mother Nature and sisterhood around the South West's most stunning locations.

Sophie Brown

Sophie is the founder of Bristol Stepping Sistas and your qualified walk leader. Growing up in the countryside, Sophie always enjoyed exploring rural areas and found spending time in nature healing. But she recognised lots of women of colour are held back from doing the same - they might feel unsafe, judged or exposed in these unknown environments. Sophie was inspired to create safe walks where women of colour felt comfortable - Bristol Stepping Sistas was born. This growing sisterhood champions exercise, fresh air and nature with an encouraging support network at its core.
