Paint Your Own Watercolour Painting

This relaxed, two-hour workshop is designed to give you a taste of watercolour painting – whether you’re picking up a brush for the first time or rekindling a previous love of painting.

Guided by artist Hannah, you’ll explore how to mix colours and work in layers to gradually build a picture. You’ll experiment with abstract, semi-abstract and representational approaches, discovering how your brushes can create everything from beautiful realism to exciting abstract effects.

Our starting point will be ‘human connection to place’ – a wonderfully open theme that can take you anywhere meaningful to you.

You might explore a landscape, cityscape or interior; somewhere remembered, imagined or captured in a photograph or postcard. We’ll draw inspiration from memory, imagination, photographs, still life and artists’ sketchbooks, as well as a breadth of artists and movements including Romanticism, Impressionism and Post-Impressionism.

You’ll begin by creating a strip of colour mixes and experimenting with abstract mark-making. You’ll then use what you’ve discovered to create your own A5 watercolour painting.

There will also be plenty of paper available for experimenting and playing with different techniques along the way.

Who is it for?

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners and those with more experience. It’s a perfect opportunity to try something new, refresh your skills or rediscover a love of watercolour painting.

Hannah will support you throughout, sharing her expertise and infectious enthusiasm for creativity. The emphasis is on enjoying the process, experimenting and feeling excited by what you create.

By the end of the workshop, you’ll have plenty to congratulate yourself on – and the weekend will have barely begun!
