Step beyond the tourist trail and explore one of Bristol’s oldest neighbourhoods at your own pace, guided by a local voice in your ear.
This experience is part of City Uncovered: Bristol, taking place from 18th–31st May – a limited-time series of unique, under-the-radar experiences designed to help you see the city differently.
What to expect:
Your journey begins at Castle Bridge, where you’ll press play and meet your guide, Heather—a long-time Old Market local. As you set off, you’ll be introduced to Bristol’s Anglo-Saxon origins and how the city first took shape.
From there, you’ll wander through Castle Park, uncovering the hidden remains of Bristol’s Norman castle and learning how this once-powerful fortress influenced the city’s development. As the route leads you into Old Market, you’ll step into a neighbourhood shaped by nearly a thousand years of trading, stories, and cultural change.
Using GPS technology, the tour unfolds automatically as you walk—so you can move at your own pace, pause whenever you like, and fully explore the places that catch your attention. Along the way, Heather will guide you to her favourite hidden gems, from historic pubs and independent cafes to breweries and live music spots.
You can complete the route in just over an hour, or stretch it into a full afternoon or evening—stopping for food, drinks, and discoveries as you go.

Heather is the founder of Bristol Hoppers. She has lived in Bristol for more than 20 years and still loves to show this off. Her love for craft beer began after the first brewery taproom opened in Bristol. Over the weekend you'll probably find Heather in one of the city's taprooms or craft beer bars - unless she happens to be away camping instead! Heather enjoys encouraging others to drink locally and meeting like-minded people.
