What you'll do

Winter is coming! And we all know what that means...

It's time to wrap up warm and cosy up to fuzzy things. So why not book yourselves into a crafty experience that will seriously get you into the mood?

Everyone loves polar bears. Cute. Festive. Furry. In this workshop, learn to needle felt a small polar bear with the help of your creative host and needle felting artist, Amelia.

Amelia will show you the techniques used to needle felt 3D shapes. You'll start by building your basic felt structures like the body, legs and head. You’ll then be able to felt them together, adding shape and definition and attaching the most fiddly parts such as the eyes, nose and ears. Finally, transform your bear into a decoration for the winter period!

This experience is designed to provide a relaxing opportunity to discover more about this versatile craft. The wonderful thing about needle felting is how forgiving it can be – any mistakes can easily be changed by adding or taking away wool, so it really is a chance to experiment with your imagination.

No prior crafting experience is needed and guests of all abilities are welcome. The art of needle felting is very simple. All you need is wool, a felting mat and a specific needle - then you can create almost anything you like! A felting needle has small grooves on the end, so when it's repeatedly inserted into wool, a 3D shape is slowly formed as the wool fibres intertwine together. Magic!

With some time and a dash of imagination, you'll create something beautiful to keep or share as a gift. Plus who doesn't love polar bears...

About Amelia Gibbs

Amelia is a self-taught felting artist whose journey started over three years ago when she discovered various needle felted decorations at art fairs, and fell in love with the craft. She often creates her beloved felted animals but is always eager to try something new too.

Recently, Amelia has been developing her wet felting technique – a method of combining wool fibres using soapy water. She is keen to make her work more sustainable and has been testing bamboo wools and natural dyes for certain projects, and reusing discarded wool where possible. Amelia is passionate about sharing her craft, particularly the endless possibilities of wool and how forgiving and versatile a textile it is.

Amelia

While training as an actor at university, Amelia discovered her love of needle felting and began to create small felted animals such as foxes and polar bears. For over three years she has used felting to create unique gifts for friends and family – from needle felted platypuses to wet felted bars of soap. Amelia is an experienced facilitator having run running science workshops and presenting planetarium shows. This has inspired her craft and Amelia has even felted a miniature version of the solar system. At the moment she is trying to combine her two greatest passions, theatre and felting, by taking on the challenge of building a felted puppet.
