Life Drawing and Sculpture: 12 Week Course

This is a 12 week course, running on Fridays at 3pm. Please note there will be a break for half term on February 17th.

Looking for ways to feel creative? Want to try something new? Ignite your artistic spark with this immersive life drawing and sculpture course. Throughout the 12 weeks, you'll develop your skills and confidence, leaving with a new passion and drawing ability.

This course is open all levels and artistic abilities. You'll work in the relaxed and friendly environment of Bath Artists' Studios, and your host Martin will provide guidance throughout. Individual tuition will be offered during each class, and the needs of each student will be assessed throughout the course in order to provide personalised teaching.

Course details:

  • The aim of this course is to study the shape and structure of the human body, through its representation on two-dimensional and three-dimensional mediums.
  • You'll be working with male and female models. A range of different poses will be chosen, to challenge and build up your perceptive and describing abilities.
  • After drawing the models from life, you'll engage with the three-dimensional form, undertaking individual sculpture projects. These works will be based on your analytical figure drawings.
  • You'll mainly be working with charcoal and graphite for life drawing, and with clay on your sculptures.
  • All materials will be provided, however, students are welcome to bring their own.
  • Each class will consist of two, one hour sessions, with a thirty minute break in between. During the break, tea and biscuits will be available.

There's the possibility of booking additional classes each week. Please contact your host to discuss this.

As an Artist, my practice examines the way in which people build their identities by physically interacting with each other. To me, this form of engagement is a reflection of their experience and understanding of the world. I see the human body as an instrument to physically relate to others and to the environment. Because of this, my pieces tend to either represent or reference actions executed by humans with their bodies. I currently run life drawing and sculpture courses at Bath Artists' Studios, where I hope to share my passions with my students.

Martin Ortiz de Taranco (He/Him)

I am an artist specialising in sculpture, photography and performance and I graduated from Bath Spa University in 2021, where I completed a BA in Fine Art. I am also the current resident artist at Bath Artists' Studios.

My practice revolves around the human body as an instrument to understand the world, through physically interacting with others and with the environment. I have been passionate for drawing the human form for a long time, which has led me to participate in life drawing classes and workshops for more than 20 years. I became a life model in 2013 and since then, I have worked for several universities in Bristol and Bath, as well as for individual artists and associations.
