Lego Relief Printing: Make Art Using Lego

Want to learn how to make a piece of printed artwork using Lego? Then join Stirchley Printworks for a friendly and creative relief printing workshop!

In this workshop, you will learn how to use pieces of Lego to create fun and contemporary printed art. You will learn how to make designs with Lego pieces, before inking them up and running them through a specialist printing press.

Your host for this experience is Stirchley Printworks, whose experienced printmakers will show you all the tips and tricks you need to make your own relief printed pieces.

What to expect:

  • Learn how to use Lego blocks and bases to make a relief print
  • Be guided on how to make your designs
  • Build your designs using blocks to make images, patterns or text
  • Learn how to roll ink onto the plate
  • Have a go at printing your designs using an Albion press
  • Leave with an original piece of artwork, printed by you!

This experience is perfect for anyone looking for a fun and relaxed printing workshop. Simple, quick and effective, you'll finish the day with plenty of ideas to carry on relief printing at home.

COVID-19 guidelines

  • Workshops are small, with plenty of room to space out.
  • All equipment is cleaned regularly and hand sanitiser and wipes are available.

On the day

  • Please aim to arrive 5 minutes early to get settled in.
  • Your host has a 24/7 car park and is close to Bournville train station and Stirchley high street.
  • The studio can get a little chilly, so please bring some warm clothing.
  • Please bring a sketchbook for notes and doodling ideas.
  • Please also bring along some images from magazines or printouts for a little inspiration!

James Turner (He/Him)

James Turner is a Birmingham-based printmaker, Lecturer and Technician. He is a founding member of Stirchley Printworks a print studio and workshop based in south Birmingham.
James studied for a BA in Fine Art at Birmingham City University and an MA in Multi-Disciplinary Printmaking at The University of The West of England, Bristol.
