Introduction to swing dance

What you'll do

Swing dancing is a fun and joyful dance and in this lively beginners workshop you’re bound to have a good time – if you want to try out a new style of dance, give partner dancing a go or have a lot of fun while you exercise, this workshop is the perfect opportunity to do just that.

The workshop will start with an overview of the fascinating history of this jazz-era dance before you go through a quick warm-up to get you limbered up and ready to move.

Once the music starts, you’ll be tapping your feet to the infectious rhythm and raring to go so your dance master host will take you through the basic footwork to get you started. As the workshop progresses, you’ll be introduced to different moves and will be able to increase the speed if you’re feeling up to it!

Swing is a partner dance, but you’ll change who you’re dancing with throughout the workshop so you don’t need to come with a partner. Switching like this gives everyone a chance to adapt and learn.

By the end of the workshop, you might just be hooked on this wonderful dance! As well as your new moves, you’ll go home with a playlist of classic swing songs so you can keep up the moves once the experience is over.

Minimum fitness level required.

Your hosts

Sam Dobbie

Sam's love of swing music started at an early age – Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong accompanied the long journeys of his childhood. That love transformed into a love of swing dancing which he started in Toronto in 2012. Sam’s been dancing ever since and started teaching to share his passion through fun, energetic and accessible workshops for all levels.

Tashi Gregorska

Tashi has always loved to dance a range of styles (from ballet and tap to African and hip-hop) and played clarinet in a jazz band. When she happened upon a swing dance night in Bristol in 2010, it all clicked into place and she was instantly hooked.

Tashi's love for swing dancing comes from its diversity and fun - both in the dance itself and in the people who make up the swing dance community. She enjoys continuing to learn and develop her dance practice and loves having the opportunity to share her passion with her students.

Francesca Santilli

Francesca has been teaching Lindy Hop in Bristol for 7 years, but she’s loved it ever since she watched a show about the Jitterbug at 10 years old. She particularly enjoys the playful attitude in Lindy Hop - in no other dance style can you fall over and just laugh it off with jazz hands! Francesca will mix the joyful silliness of Lindy Hop with her attention and care for the details and moves of the dance, making sure the class is fun and enjoyable for everyone. She enjoys helping people to dance in a way that feels natural and encouraging others to find their own style while understanding the technique.
