Intro to Pattern Cutting

What you'll do

Imagine if you could make your own clothes - how sweet life would be! If only you could wave a magic wand and design your own wardrobe with endless possibilities. Maybe you've felt seriously tempted, but wasn't sure where to start. Creative studio Set Square Patterns will show you the ropes (you won't even have to learn magic).

In this experience learn how to make a skirt block (a fitted skirt that sits on the waist) using your own measurments. Get familiar using the Winifred Aldrich pattern cutting method at the same time.

You will learn:

  • How to take measurements for the skirt block
  • How to draft a basic skirt block in 1/4 scale (this is great for building a technical file)
  • How to adapt the basic block to include a waistband, learn to make an A-Line and pleated skirt
  • Find out about pattern terminology, darts, grainlines and seam allowances

You will be working in 1/4 scale so you can fit your pattern on A4 paper, but this can be transferred to life-size scale when using a regular ruler. This experience is made for beginners and those fairly new to this practice - your wonderful host will bring you right up to speed!

What you need to bring along:

  • A notebook and a bottle of water

What will be provided:

  • All equipment
  • 1/4 scale ruler
  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Rubber
  • Pattern cutting handouts

So how about it, fancy getting one step closer to designing the wardrobe of your dreams?

Your host

Carla Diogo

Carla decided to open a teaching studio because she believes there's no better way of adding value to your wardrobe than learning how to make clothes yourself. Gaining the knowledge to turn fabric into clothes is a magical craft she's passionate about sharing with her guests. Carla's worked in fashion for over ten years, the mass waste associated with the fast fashion industry got Carla thinking about more sustainable approaches to our wardrobes. She wanted to embrace a smaller wardrobe, full of pieces she could wear in any given season and still love. This is how Set Square Patterns was born.
