What to Expect / Learning Outcomes

Join me as I guide you through the fascinating natural dyeing process. You’ll experience the unrivaled beauty of these colours, and learn to work with them yourself.

  • Experiment with a variety of plant materials, dyes and fabrics
  • Prepare, mordant, and dye both cotton and silk using safe, non-synthetic methods
  • Experience dyeing and over-dyeing to create a stunning palette of natural hues
  • Explore the “alchemy” of natural dyeing, using acids, alkalis, and metallic salts to achieve vivid transformations
  • Learn how to make and use natural dyes from whole plants and extract powders
  • Learn to source fabrics, dyes, mordants, and studio equipment sustainably for your own practice

Rhyannan Hall (She/Her)

Rhyannan (b. 1990) is a Bristol-based artist whose artistic journey spans continents. Graduating in 2014 with a BA in Costume for Performance design from the Arts University Bournemouth, she found her passion in Japanese arashi shibori. Her work has been showcased at prestigious venues like the Toyama Museum of Art and Design and the Japanese Embassy. With over 7 years of teaching experience, Rhyannan shares her expertise in Arashi Shibori, inspiring others at institutions and her Bristol studio.
