This workshop will cover:

  • How to thread a sewing machine
  • How to make a button hole
  • How to sew different seam finishes (french seam, lock and fell seam, binding etc.)
  • Overlocking
  • How to make a scrunchie or drawstring bag

If you have never used a domestic sewing machine or maybe it's been a while, this workshop is a great opportunity to get you familiar and comfortable behind a sewing machine. Workshops are small, up to four people, so you will be able to learn in a relaxed and friendly environment. Your final creation will be a scrunchie or a drawstring bag.

Your host

Carla Diogo

Carla decided to open a teaching studio because she believes there's no better way of adding value to your wardrobe than learning how to make clothes yourself. Gaining the knowledge to turn fabric into clothes is a magical craft she's passionate about sharing with her guests. Carla's worked in fashion for over ten years, the mass waste associated with the fast fashion industry got Carla thinking about more sustainable approaches to our wardrobes. She wanted to embrace a smaller wardrobe, full of pieces she could wear in any given season and still love. This is how Set Square Patterns was born.

What people are saying

Really enjoyed the session with Cara.. As suggested by Cara it would have been helpful to have a handout with a simple diagram and explanation for each type of seam covered in lesson.. Cara was friendly, approachable and encouraging would definitely be interested in doing other dressmaking/ pattern making courses withhher

Carla was a brilliant teacher - inspiring, gentle, encouraging and really good at what she does. The workshop space is lovely, and it was great to hear a little more about the other projects that Carla is working on at the end of the workshop. I came away feeling inspired, and keen to get back to my machine. I am looking forward to coming back to another workshop soon, and have already recommended her studio to several friends. Thank you!

I really enjoyed this workshop, and it has given me the motivation to continue learning to sew! Carla was an amazing host and teacher - she gave me lots of confidence, was talented, fun, and kind. I was a complete beginner, and learnt how to thread the machine, lots of different sewing techniques, and made a cute scrunchie. I would love to go to another workshop run by Carla!
