Uncover Nature: A Mendips Hike & Draw

Slow down, sketch, and reconnect with nature on a scenic guided hike through the Mendip Hills, blending creativity with mindful exploration.

This experience is part of City Uncovered: Bristol, taking place from 18th–31st May - a limited-time series of unique, under-the-radar experiences designed to help you see the city differently.

What to expect You’ll meet your group at The Swan Inn, Rowberrow before setting off on a gentle circular hike through the Mendips. Early on, Sam (your host), will introduce the concept of “Hike & Draw” - a relaxed, no-pressure approach to creativity rooted in observation and curiosity. As you walk, you’ll follow a scenic route through woodland, heathland, and limestone paths, pausing regularly to sketch, reflect, and take in your surroundings. These creative stops invite you to notice the small details - flora, fungi, textures, and shifting seasonal changes.

The route begins with a steep climb up to Dolebury Warren, where you’re rewarded with expansive views across the Somerset Levels and, on clear days, the Bristol Channel. Here, you’ll also encounter traces of ancient history, from Bronze Age burial mounds to wildlife like roe deer and peregrine falcons. From there, the path continues on towards Black Down before descending to Rowberrow Warren, bringing a gentle close to the walk through this varied and historic landscape.

Expect a calm, supportive atmosphere with plenty of time for conversation, quiet moments, and creative expression.
