This experience is part of City Uncovered: Birmingham, taking place from 18th–31st May – a limited-time series of unique, under-the-radar experiences designed to help you see the city differently.
What to expect
You’ll start in a relaxed classroom setting, where your instructor will introduce the foundations of graffiti art and its roots in Hip-Hop culture. Here, you’ll begin experimenting with letter design using paint pens, building confidence and developing your own creative style.
Once you’ve got to grips with the basics, you’ll head into a weatherproof outdoor space, suited up in protective overalls, mask, and gloves. With expert guidance, you’ll learn safe spray-painting techniques and put your new skills into practice, layering colour and form like a true street artist.
The session finishes with you designing and creating your own 50cm x 25cm canvas using paint pens – a bold, finished artwork that dries instantly and is yours to take home.
Expect a fun, supportive atmosphere where creativity is encouraged and no prior experience is needed.

On the day
No need to bring anything but would recommend wearing clothes and footwear that you don’t mind getting paint on. We supply overalls, masks and gloves. Our venue is warm and all on the ground floor with accessible toilets. The spray painting part is outside but under cover which provides cover if it’s raining. If travelling by car we are at the rear of a car park, which is modestly priced.

Hi, my name is David but my nickname is Panda. I’m a graffiti artist from Birmingham and have been since 1986, and started my own business through The Princes Trust in 1998. Since then I’ve been commissioned to urbanise some amazing spaces, from big walls to film sets, and a load of bedrooms in between! Workshop sessions have also been on the list, working with young and not so young people from all walks of life, and giving them the skills and know how to enjoy this exciting artform.
