What you'll do

Discover a wild, rugged and appetising part of the city you never knew existed. Join Go Foraging’s Martin for a wild walk along the River Frome in Bristol.

Forage super nutritious wild edibles, which more often than not, are growing on our doorsteps. Stumble across meadowsweet, wild raspberry, mugwort, garlic mustard, and plenty of other plants which look good enough to eat. Embark on your edibles adventure while enjoying a spectacular river view.

Your knowledgeable host Martin will share some of his favourite recipes for pickles, ferments, herbal infusions, cocktail syrups, summer salad dressings, tempeh marinades, and more. Get the chance to sample some pre-made tasters, as well as making wild herbal infusions. Bring along a flask of hot water and add delicious herbs as you go along the way.

Martin will give a talk, covering everything from wonderful flavour combinations to plants' nutritional benefits and modern uses of wild foods. You'll leave with so much knowledge you'll feel like a pro! Martin will share the best ways to approach foraging and how to get the most out of this incredibly rewarding, age-old activity. You may want to bring a few tupperware tubs along for the different leaves and seeds you forage. Not to forget, some biscuits or bread to pair up with the wild pickles you’ll encounter along the way.

If you fancy, bring a notepad. Drawing and annotating plants can be a great way of imprinting them into your mind. (The sketch can be very rough, no need to be the next Monet!) Alternatively, use your notepad for pressing leaves and flowers or snap away with your camera. We all learn differently so whatever works for you!

Your host

Martin Bailey

Martin is Go Foraging’s founder. As a child, Martin was always searching nearby hedgerows and woodland for adventure. From finding wild asparagus dotted along country lanes to giant puffballs to cook at home - the smell of soil has always been evocative to him.

Moving to Bristol in his early twenties, Martin connected with other people who were passionate about hunting for wild food. He soon found himself hooked on foraging and spending long hours outdoors. Only the darkness dictated when he had to head home.

A few years later Martin began supplying wild food to local restaurants. He was delighted to see how it elevated the chefs' creativity. Go Foraging is a chance for Martin to remain attuned to nature and the subtle changes in our environment. He recognises both are vital attributes for any forager. Martin loves discovering unusual food, interesting places, and meeting new people. He finds teaching highly rewarding and aims to share his foraging love with others.

How to get there

What people are saying

Myself and my daughter came on the foraging walk with Martin, he was very knowledgeable and knew the area we walked well.
He had brought a lovely taster picnic and hot water to make drinks from the foraged offerings..it was a lovely time to all sit and chat together.
Would highly recommend.
