An exciting guided tour of former Glenside Hospital grounds, which includes an annual pass to our museum of mental health care
Discover a hidden side of Bristol's history on this fascinating walking tour
Uncover some niche Bristol history in the stunning historic grounds surrounding Glenside Hospital Museum with our experienced volunteer and guide Anwyl Cooper-Willis.
Originally built as Bristol Lunatic Asylum in 1861, these spacious grounds were created to aid mental health and wellbeing. Satisfy your curiosity by unearthing the rich history hidden within the walls of the old hospital.
In a pre-medication era the only options available to manage mental illness were lifestyle interventions such as a good quality diet, plenty of exercise and a meaningful occupation, followed by adequate sleep. The extensive Glenside site was developed to provide an uplifting and spacious environment, both indoors and out.
Whether you have personal or family connections with the hospital, or are simply looking for a unique and exciting day out in Bristol, we'd love to welcome you to explore with us.

I cover digital engagement, social media and event management for Glenside Hospital Museum. I curated the Tea in the Turret experience with help from a team of volunteers in 2025 in order to give visitors a fun way to approach our collection, and am thrilled to see so many people enjoying it. Who wouldn't love a museum visit with a side of tea and cake?
I'll be managing your booking and am happy to answer any questions you may have about Tea in the Turret. Our knowledgable and friendly volunteer team will give you a warm welcome, hosting your experience on arrival at the museum.
