Discover history like you never have before. Opened in 1861, a state-of-the art hospital for the mentally ill, this fascinating Bristol museum is based in the Grade II listed church built for the patients. Explore the development of mental health care over time through our fascinating collection historic, medical artefacts. Immerse yourself in the museum's interactive displays. Admire at the creative skill of patient-artist Denis Reed, who produced a great number of wonderful drawings of the life of male patients in the 1950s. Many of these incredible pieces are on display, as are breathtaking sculptures from Glenside Hospital's art therapy department. Uncover the intriguing history of the Dower House, busting urban myths about this imposing yellow castle-like building, perched on the side of the M32 entering Bristol. Discover the hospital’s few years as Beaufort War Hospital, during WWI, helping nearly 30,000 wounded soldiers brought back from battle fields for treatment. The museum hosts regular art exhibitions covering themes related to mental health and wellness, and frequently hosts talks and events, including a secret room where you can enjoy afternoon tea (please visit the YUUP event "Tea in the Turret" to book this experience, which includes a visit to the museum). So, if you’re curious about history, medicine, and the stories behind them, this 'hidden gem’ has compelling reasons for a visit.
