If youâre a plant enthusiast or just curious about the natural world, youâll love this ethnobotany walk with Nicholas, an expert in how people use plants. Heâll take you around Totterdown, one of the most vibrant and diverse areas of Bristol, and show you the amazing variety of plants that grow in the city.
Youâll discover how to recognise different plants, and what they can offer us in terms of medicine, food, dye, fibre and more. Youâll also learn about the cultural and historical significance of plants, and how they relate to different traditions and folklore.
Each walk will feature a special medicinal herb, and youâll have the chance to sample a tincture and a tea made from it. Youâll also get some advice on how to cultivate and harvest your own herbs, and how to prepare your own herbal products at home.
This is a unique opportunity to explore Totterdown from an ethnobotanical perspective, and to find out more about the wonders of plants and their uses. Whether youâre into gardening, herbalism, plant sciences, ecology or language, youâll find something to spark your interest and imagination on this walk.

Nicholas is a medical herbalist and member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists. He created The Apothecary Box after studying Ethnobotany as a way to share his interest in the natural world and our relationship with it. Ethnobotany is the study of the connection between plants and people and examines how they affect each other. The Apothecary Boxâs fascinating walks shine a light on plants as medicine, food, and their often overlooked historical influence.
Nicholas has been a herbalist since 2009 and more recently completed a Master's in Ethnobotany. His interests are in health and wellness, plants, language, and travelling.
