The experience
A circle of you, a drum resting in every pair of hands. One beat to begin.
Then another answers it, and another, until the whole room is breathing in time and you can no longer tell your own rhythm from the one beside you.
Nothing to perform. Nothing to get wrong. The rhythm catches fast, and before long the room is loud and a little wild, hands flying, faces grinning, the lot of you swept up in a sound far bigger than any one of you could make alone.
A heartbeat was the first sound we ever heard, drumming in the dark before we were born, and the body has never forgotten it. So when the playing finally eases, something in you settles, the thinking mind goes quiet, and you leave lighter than you came.
This holds a hen, a birthday, a team finding its way back to each other, any gathering that wants to feel a connection to themselves and others without words.
As a group warms, the rhythm sometimes wants more: voices joining in, movement. Some groups dance, some sing, some stay with the drum the whole way through.
Some days are bright and loud. Some ask to go slowly.
Perfect for
Hen dos: a loud, joyful way to bring everyone together, from her oldest friend to her mum, around something many of you may not have tried before
Birthdays: marked with a proper racket and your loved ones
Team and away days: for a group that's gone remote, gone quiet, or just needs to feel like one again
Friends and family: reunions, anniversaries, or any time you want everyone together and truly present
What you'll feel
The buzz of a roomful of people making one big sound together, and the grin you can't quite shake afterwards
That loose, light, slightly giddy feeling that turns up the moment you stop thinking and just play
A group that arrived as acquaintances, or as colleagues, leaving as something warmer
Real joy, the kind that needs no drink and no performing, open to every age and every pair of hands
And underneath all the fun, a calmer, settled body, because rhythm does that to a nervous system whether you mean it to or not

Ruth is a qualified sound therapist and writer.
“After suffering from chronic pain for 13 years beforehand, my drum unintentionally became the antidote to my pain. An accidental gong bath, revealed to me that sound was my calling. Drumming, sound and movement have been incredibly healing for me and I love supporting people to delve into their inner worlds; to discover the wisdom that already exists within."
