This course is about creative experimentation with ceramics and glaze. Take your pottery to the next level and develop your personal style. Designed for those with prior experience, this course uniquely offers equal focus on clay and glaze, form and surface. In a supportive, creative workspace, you will push your boundaries, explore advanced techniques, and get into the chemistry and application of glazes.
Helen has been teaching and working with ceramics and glaze for 20+ years. Her designs have been featured on The Great Pottery Throw Down and commissioned by companies such as Aberdeen Standard Life and EtsyUK. Her work is best known for its complex melting glazes and quietly provocative design. Helen's breadth of experience is invaluable when it comes to teaching creative ceramics and glaze. This course gives students the confidence to try things out and push the boundaries of material and function in pottery and glaze.
You will make glazes from scratch, learn about oxides, engobes, slip decoration, application techniques, colour and texture in glaze. You will learn hand building, designing with clay and slab construction techniques. Plus we will be inspired by contemporary and historic pottery design. This is ideally suited to intermediate practice with some experience required.
Hand moulding, slab building, joining, forming with plaster moulds, pots, creative and expressive pots - abstract pieces, glaze recipes using oxides, coloured decorating slips, buckets of chemistry and more!
You will finish a piece every week which will be fired ready for the next week. There will be a section every week for glaze testing and glaze application of the previous week's work. We will be mixing up lots of exciting glaze materials. Some experience is required to do this course.
