This course is about creative experimentation with ceramics and glaze. Helen has been teaching and working with ceramics and glaze for 20+ years. Her designs have been featured on The Great Pottery Throw Down and commissioned by companies such as Aberdeen Standard Life and EtsyUK. Her work is best known for its complex melting glazes and quietly provocative design. Helen's breadth of experience is invaluable when it comes to teaching creative ceramics and glaze. This course gives students the confidence to try things out and push the boundaries of material and function in pottery.
The beginners course offers a chance to learn a step by step technique every week. You will start with clay hand building basics; coiling, joining, slab rolling, forming with plaster moulds and textural techniques. Glaze techniques are based on application methods; dipping, brushing and creative application onto your pieces is encouraged. Glaze materials include: oxides, coloured clay slip decoration and pre mixed glazes. Plus, we will be inspired by contemporary and historic pottery design. This is ideally suited to beginners with no experience required, or anyone who wants to re start their past projects in ceramics and glaze.
Timings are 6.30 - 9pm THURSDAYS April; 16th, 23rd, 30th May; 7th, 14th, 21st
All materials, equipment and firings provided. This is primarily a beginers course, for anyone new to ceramics and glaze or who have tried it before and need some reminders.
You will finish a piece every week and I will fire it for you. There will be a section every week for glaze testing and glaze application of the previous week's work. You do not need any experience, just an experimental mindset.

I have been working with ceramics and glaze for 20+ years. I have taught art and pottery in schools and with community groups. I love seeing people's styles and skills develop. The workshops are playful, fun and free with all the technical support you need. Workshops have up to 10 people for a comfortable buzz and learning atmosphere, sharing ideas together. No one leaves a workshop with the same piece and all the confidence to have a another go.

It has been commissioned by companies such as Aberdeen Standard Life and Chateaux Villepreux. Last year my condiment pot was featured on The Great Pottery Throw Down!
