An Evening with Japanese Shibori for Beginners

Shibori is the ancient Japanese art of tie-dye. This evening masterclass gives you a chance to explore one shibori method as chosen by the class!

Each class will be different- just like each shibori! Much like a pottery class, you can keep coming back to try new patterns in an intimate workshop setting of only 4 people so you can really perfect your shibori dye techniques.

Shibori methods are like building blocks that you can piece together and explore your own designs and ideas. In this masterclass, you will be dyeing with indigo, the traditional dye of shibori.

Sometimes known as ‘memory on cloth’, shibori is the tradition of shaped-resist dyeing. Shibori is all about learning to embrace imperfections and surprises, leaving behind that part of us that yearns for perfection and yearns for control.

In the West, we became familiar with 'tie-and-dye', but shibori is a refined method and the cloth becomes something almost completely different. Through stitching, wrapping, pleating, folding and binding the cloth a whole range of beautiful patterns are possible. The ingenuity lies in its simplicity and yet the devil lies in the detail to create really crisp, clear and refined patterns.

What to expect:

  • An intimate class size so you can truly explore the art of shibori
  • Tutored by an expert in the ancient art of shibori
  • Learn the history behind this incredible technique
  • Take home your own unique piece of textile art

You can expect a day of creativity, learning and the opportunity to create some beautiful shibori designs to keep. You'll head home with new textile art knowledge, some traditional dyeing skills and some of your own shibori artwork to keep.
