Beginner's Linocut Printing at Prior Shop

Looking to learn a new creative skill and have fun along the way? Then come along to this linocut printing workshop for beginners at Prior Shop!

In this experience, you will learn how to make beautiful artwork using the technique of linocut printing. This traditional form of printmaking uses designs carved into a linocut block, which is then inked up before being used to make the print. This means every print is unique, bold and striking.

Your host for this workshop is an experienced printmaker, Angela, who will guide you through the process step by step.

What to expect:

  • A hands-on introduction to linocut printing
  • Learn how to carve your designs onto the printing block
  • Discover how to print with hand pressure, bamboo barens, rollers and a trusty spoon!
  • Be given plenty of guidance and tips from your host
  • Get inspiration for your designs
  • Learn how to prepare and ink
  • Finish with a set of handmade prints on various paper, plus your printing block to continue practising at home!

This workshop is perfect for anyone looking to learn something new and have fun getting creative along the way. Step away with new knowledge, confidence and the inspiration to carry on creating unique prints at home.

COVID-19 guidelines

  • Please do not attend if you test positive for Covid.
  • Hand sanitiser will be readily available to you.
  • The room is spacious and open and well ventilated.
  • You are welcome to wear a facemask but it is non essential.

On the day

  • Please bring with you a few sketches/designs that you would like to print or use as inspiration for your prints. If you are a little stuck Angela can offer advice and guidance, please get in touch.
  • Sketches should be 10cm x 10cm (maximum) of simple line and block shapes in black & white
  • All equipment and materials are included
  • Please bring an apron, or wear clothes you don't mind getting messy!

Angela Lai Yen Printmaker

Angela is a Bristol based printmaker with a studio in Bath. She works predominantly in linocut and monotype, designing from scratch - carving and printing with the Bath Artist Printmakers where she's been a member for over ten years. Her limited prints are exhibited and sold regularly.

Angela is passionate about teaching and has extensive knowledge of the printing process. Let Angela guide you with demonstrations and countless tips. Whether you're a beginner or improving your technique, you'll leave her class with new confidence, fresh inspiration and skills.

Angela teaches in her Bath Artist Printmakers' studio and various venues in and around Bath and Frome. She will be working collaboratively with Bristol's Prior Shop.
