Looking to learn a new creative skill? Always wanted to carve lino but unsure where to start? Then this linocut class run by experienced printmaker Angela Lai Yen at Prior Shop is perfect for you!

In this experience, you will learn how to make beautiful artwork using the technique of linocut printing. This traditional form of printmaking uses designs carved into a linocut block, which is then inked up before being used to make a print. This means every print is unique, bold and striking.

The class is suitable for beginners and those wishing to develop and perfect their existing skills.

Your host for this workshop is printmaker Angela Lai Yen who also teaches extensive classes at the Bath Artist Printmakers She will guide you through the process step by step.

What to expect:

  • A small class so you will be given plenty of individual guidance and tips to suit you.
  • A hands-on introduction to the process of linocut printing.
  • Get inspiration for your designs and discover what works well as a print.
  • Learn how to use the carving tools safely and confidently so you are able to carve your design into the printing block.
  • Learn how to prepare and ink up your lino block.
  • Discover how to print with hand pressure, bamboo barens, rollers and a trusty spoon!
  • Finish with a collection of hand-pulled prints and your carved printing block to take away with you!

This workshop is perfect for anyone looking to learn something new and to have fun being creative. Step away with new found knowledge, the confidence and the inspiration to carry on creating unique prints at home.

  • Please do not attend if you test positive for Covid.
  • You are welcome to wear a facemask but it is non essential.

On the day

  • Please bring with you a few sketches/designs that you would like to print or use as inspiration for your prints. If you are a little stuck Angela can offer advice and guidance, please get in touch. Angela can also be found on instagram under Angela Lai Yen Printmaker.
  • Sketches should be 10cm x 10cm (maximum) of simple line and block shapes in black & white
  • All equipment and materials are included
  • Please bring an apron, or wear clothes if you do not mind getting messy!

Angela Lai Yen Printmaker

Angela is a Bristol based printmaker with a studio in Bath. She works predominantly in linocut and monotype, designing from scratch - carving and printing with the Bath Artist Printmakers where she's been a member for over ten years. Her limited prints are exhibited and sold regularly.

Angela is passionate about teaching and has extensive knowledge of the printing process. Let Angela guide you with demonstrations and countless tips. Whether you're a beginner or improving your technique, you'll leave her class with new confidence, fresh inspiration and skills.

Angela teaches in her Bath Artist Printmakers' studio and various venues in and around Bath and Frome. She will be working collaboratively with Bristol's Prior Shop.
