Autumn Safari in the Forest of Dean

Experience the wonders of autumn on a captivating journey through the ancient woodlands of the Forest of Dean.

Your expert guide will lead you on a gentle walk through the colourful autumnal woodland as you listen and watch for woodland birds, discover the wonders of trees and their leaves and seek out the tracks and signs of wild boar and deer. Get up close to fascinating mosses, lichens and woodland fungi on the forest floor, spot late-flying butterflies, dodge dung beetles on the forest tracks and experience the best that the autumn season has to offer!

Your host, Liz, will help you identify the wildlife you see, while also sharing fascinating facts about the forest’s rich history and important ecology. Whether you're a seasoned naturalist or simply seeking a peaceful escape, this guided wildlife safari offers an opportunity to connect with the natural world and discover the wonders of this unique and enchanting landscape at one of its most beautiful times of year.

We usually have some flexibility with available dates, so if you can't see a day you can do please get in touch and we will do our best to accommodate you!

COVID-19 guidelines

The activities are held outdoors at a time with social distancing easy to achieve. Participants will use their own transport and only those not experiencing any Covid-19 symptoms will be permitted to attend.

Your host Liz follows the current government guidelines on groups sizes. The covid-19 risk assessment is part of the overall risk assessment completed.

On the day

You will be out for around 2 hours and walk approx 1.5 to 2 miles (2.4–3km) at a steady or slow pace, taking in the scenery, sounds and wildlife along the way.

The walk takes place along well-surfaced tracks and you are able to venture off onto smaller paths and gentle uphill or downhill terrain.

Binoculars, sturdy shoes or boots and weather-appropriate clothing are advised.

Liz is a freelance naturalist, writer, editor and artist with over 20 years of experience studying, writing about and watching wildlife, as well as editing books about the natural world. She has a passion for the Forest of Dean, with a particular interest in its wild boar, and can’t wait to introduce you to this enchanting landscape and its fascinating wildlife.
