Set sail through landlocked Birmingham on a quirky walking tour uncovering the city’s surprising maritime past
This experience is part of City Uncovered: Birmingham, taking place from 18th–31st May – a limited-time series of unique, under-the-radar experiences designed to help you see the city differently.
Join your host, Ben Waddington, for a 100-minute walking tour that reveals Birmingham’s unexpected connections to the sea. You’ll begin in the city centre, setting off on a relaxed route through streets and waterways while uncovering stories of nautical legends, maritime inventions, and the city’s curious seafaring spirit.
Along the way, you’ll hear tales of solo voyages, historic clubs, and symbolic links like anchors and mermaids woven into Birmingham’s identity. The experience is playful and story-rich, blending history with humour as you explore hidden corners and surprising details. You’ll finish at The Anchor Inn, where the group gathers to swap sea stories and enjoy a well-earned tot of rum in a lively, social atmosphere.
