The internet can be an overwhelming place. There's so much information out there, sometimes it's hard to know where to begin. Better Together's online safety courses are designed with this in mind, to help parents and carers keep their children safe online.

Angela's online safety workshops raise awareness of how to deal with online safety issues for children of all ages. Whether you're a parent, carer or professional, these workshops will empower you with the tools you need to keep your children safe.

This experience will begin with a short introduction from Angela. Discover what motivated this mum of two and online safety professional to set up Better Together. Angela will share useful background information on online safety and why it's so important for children.

At the core of this workshop are four meditations. This online workshop will focus on each of these options.

You will be covering:

  • Supervision: This will consider how you can supervise your child online. Angela will provide you with various options, depending on your child's age. This will include options for pre-schoolers right up to secondary aged young people.

  • Parental Controls: Angela will provide guidance on where you can get instructions on how to set parental controls on a wide variety of platforms and devices that your child may use or own.

  • Expectations: The online safety 'rules' discussed in this section are not prescriptive. They are simply there to give you some ideas.

  • Communication: This will cover the who/what/when of online safety. Who could your child communicate their concerns with? What could parents communicate? When is a good time to communicate? This may be communication between a parent and child, or between a child and person they feel comfortable talking to. This will explore how to create safe spaces for these conversations.

A section will then follow on how to report inappropriate online behaviour. This covers issues such as bullying, grooming, offensive and harmful content.

Angela will answer any questions you have throughout and help put your mind at ease. In your group environment, learn from one another and find solidarity in other parents' or carers' struggles. After brushing up on these online safety fundamentals, leave this course feeling less overwhelmed and more informed about the next steps you're going to take.

Angela Loveridge

Angela is Better Together’s founder. Better Together came about when this mum of two combined her IT background with motherhood.

Before having children, Angela achieved a MSc Information Technology and worked at a bank as a financial crime and data analyst. These skills would be invaluable in helping her set up Better Together further down the line.

As a mother, Angela was motivated to do what was best for her children. With modern technology infiltrating most of our lives, she knew building digital resilience was important. Angela attended a few e-safety workshops with this in mind. While they were eye-opening, they didn't offer many pragmatic tools she could put into practice after their workshops. Something was missing.

After months of research, Angela designed her own e-safety action plan and approached her local children's centre to see if they could share her findings with other parents and carers. They agreed. Rather than dictating what they should do, Angela provided various options, so parents could choose whichever suited them. Feedback confirmed Angela hadn't been the only parent struggling to wrap her head around online safety, but parents felt enthused about being able to choose their own unique plan of action.

Soon, Angela was spreading the word to other parents and carers. Things took off from there. Angela has an 'Excellent in Safeguarding' qualification, an Advanced DBS, and has attended a Home Office approved 'PREVENT Awareness Training Course'. She has also achieved an EPICT Licence, an internationally recognised qualification that acknowledges the online safety expertise of professionals working with young people and children.
