Create your own beeswax candles

What you'll do

Beeswax candles don't just look pretty cool - their texture feels amazing too. Beeswax has been used in candle making for centuries. It burns with no soot and purifies the air as it burns, making them ideal candles for anyone with breathing problems. If that didn't sound sweet enough, they smell of honey as they burn because bees eat honey to produce the wax!

Come and join Alyson (aka The Bee Lady) from Hives and Herbals and make your own beeswax candles. Alyson is a Bristol beekeeper who combines her love of gardening with her increasing interest in bees. She grows her own herbs and uses her own beeswax to make great natural hand creams and lip balms.

In this workshop, Alyson will show you how to make four different traditional rolled beeswax candles. You can choose from beautifully natural beeswax or colourful beeswax sheets that match your home. You will have the opportunity to decorate your candles to make them completely unique. Whilst you are making candles, Alyson will share some fascinating facts about her bees, why they are important to us and how we can help them. All materials will be provided and no previous experience is needed. Are you ready for your candles to cause a buzz?

This event is will be hosted at Sprouts of Bristol's green-leafed sanctuary. Sprouts will welcome you into their newly opened back room - hang out with like-minded people and surround yourself with their gorgeous plants! Sprouts will provide tea, coffee, and sweet treats to accompany your crafting adventure. All events are bring your own tipple (if you'd like). Sprouts will provide glassware, no corkage is charged.

About Sprouts of Bristol

Sprouts of Bristol is an independent plant & homewares brand. You can usually find them delivering orders around the city or at a local market chatting to lovely people about plants.

How did Sprouts come about? A designer and musician made Bristol their home over six years ago with two cats, Indie and Luluigi, and one hundred house plants. With a keen interest in sustainability, supporting indie businesses, and a love of doing what makes you happy - Sprouts of Bristol was formed. Created from founders Tom and Jessy's love of bold design, all things green, and the joy that a house plant brings to the home (and soul).

Alyson Hurst

Alyson, from Hives and Herbals, is a Bristol-based beekeeper. She’s known locally as the Bee Lady. Looking after bees and the environment is first and foremost in her mind. Only excess honey is extracted from the hive, leaving much of it for the bees. All packaging is kept to a minimum and is reusable or recyclable. She makes her lip balms and hand creams from herbs she grows herself and the beeswax she collects from her hives. Her candles are 100% beeswax. They smell of honey and help clean the air as they burn. Alyson also makes eco-friendly beeswax food wraps. She uses her own beeswax and wax bought from other local beekeepers.

She has several strands to her business:
• Products – Alyson stocks in several shops and attend craft fairs across Bristol
• Workshops – She offers candle making and herbal bath bag making workshops
• Talks – She visits groups to talk about bees and how we can help them
• School visits – bees get taken into schools to share knowledge with pupils
• Bee experiences – sessions where people can hear fascinating facts about bees, put on a bee suit and get up close then finally make a candle
