Festival of Evensong: Music at Bristol Cathedral

As part of Bristol Cathedral's Festival of Evensong, deepen your knowledge of the history of music at Bristol Cathedral, with a talk by Mark Lee, and music by the Lay Clerks.

The talk follows Evensong at 5.15pm, to which all are invited, and includes the opportunity to purchase refreshments on-site.

What is the Festival of Evensong?

Evensong has been sung in Bristol Cathedral nearly every day since 1542. While the words said or sung have barely changed in that time, composers in each generation have found afresh new ways to interpret those words through music.

From 9-15 October, we invite you to a Festival of Evensong, celebrating the music and liturgy that has inspired thousands in song and prayer through the centuries.

On a specially-curated interactive trail around the Cathedral, take yourself on a journey through Evensong.

Other events in the Festival of Evensong:

Evensong will be sung every weekday at 5.15pm by the Cathedral Choir, the Choristers, the Consort, and the Lay Clerks. Travel back through time as each Evensong during the week takes music from a different era, starting on Monday in the 21st century sung by the full Cathedral Choir, and ending in music from the Reformation on Friday sung by the six Lay Clerks.

  • On Monday, delve into the organ on a virtual tour that takes you up into the loft and inside the organ, guided by our Master of the Choristers & Organist, Mark Lee. Book here: www.yuup.co/experiences/festival-of-evensong-the-cathedral-organ

  • On Tuesday, at 1.15pm, delight in an organ recital of music inspired by Evensong, given by Christian Gautschi. (No booking necessary.)

  • Also on Tuesday, at.6.00pm discover the rich tapestry of the psalms, a central part of Evensong and some of the Church’s oldest poetry, with a talk given by the Minor Canon for Worship and Liturgy, The Revd Dr Kathryn Goldsmith. Book here: www.yuup.co/experiences/festival-of-evensong-the-psalms

  • The Festival of Evensong concludes on Sunday 15 October with a celebratory Festal Evensong with reception at 3.30pm, but Evensong can still be heard nearly every day in the Cathedral.
